More or less right but some more specifics....
So if I understand correctly since I do not have any of the files and only the database…
1) I need to download the correct version of phpbb. (Thanks for the links)
2) upload those files to the web server
3) edit the config file to point to our existing database ( not sure how to do that one)
4) Run the install and pray lol.
Have I got that right so far? I am also running the latest php version on the site. Will that be an issue? It’s been updated recently after we where hacked and the forum files deleted.
1) you'll also need to check the database to find out which extensions and styles you were using. You probably won't be able to find the exact versions but as mentioned, you should disable all non-default styles and extensions in the database (once upgraded you could download the versions that are compatible with phpBB 3.3.12 and upload those - but leave them disabled them before upgrading)
2) set prosilver as default style in the database if it wasn't
3) if you were using another language than English, you could also upload the fitting language pack - it will have to be replaced by the 3.3.12 version
Also realise that since all files were removed, that implies that uploaded images and attachments are lost (you may be able to find some of those images and files on your PC if you were to one who uploaded those but if you do you'll probably have to edit some posts (after the upgrade) to remove the non-present attachments and images and once the board is up, upgraded and running you could re-upload and re-attach those.
As to the PHP version: if it's incompatible with 3.2.8 (3.2.8 requires PHP 5.4.7+ but less than PHP 7.3) then don't try to startup the board before the upgrade. (so you could if you wanted try to start 3.2.8 using PHP 7.2) just to see whether it's running before the upgrade.
