Just simply putting in the word “deleted” (without quotes) and no other selections works here with Sphinx and I also tried it with “phpBB Native fulltext” which also works. What search backend are you using and has this worked in the past and just stopped? You can try rebuilding the search index by going to ACP> Maintenance> Search Index> delete the old index and re-create it.
